Ranchi: After the helmet checking drive started by the traffic administration in the first week of December the number of bikers on road without helmet has decreased at a rapid speed. Though the motive of the drive is still not fulfilled as many people are seen wearing cricketer helmets or cap like helmets to escape fine but which do not provide any safety and is equal to not wearing a helmet.
The traffic administration took a strong step against it and started catching hold of people who wear such helmets. Traffic DSP, R.N. Singh was spotted at Ratu Road Chowk getting hold of people and breaking their fancy helmets. “These fancy caps don’t solve the purpose of helmet. They are so fragile that will break with just one punch then how can it provide safety in case of accident. Our helmet checking drive is for the safety of people but they don’t understand the purpose of wearing a helmet, so we had to take this step”, said Traffic DSP, R.N. Singh.
The drive started at 11 am on Tuesday and continued till 4 pm at Ratu Road Chowk near new market. On the very first day of checking more than 200 people were caught wearing the fancy helmets. The helmets belonging to these people were broken and they were fined Rs. 90.
“Not just boys, even girls were caught wearing these helmets. We will continue this drive until people do not start wearing safe helmets”, said Singh.
One of the people caught wearing the cap helmet, Dinesh Kumar said, “I got a lesson from this action of the police but even if they would have told me to change the helmet I’d have done that. There was no necessity to break my helmet.”
