Bokaro: A police team constituted by SP, Bokaro, Karthik S on Wednesday arrested two members of a gang who fired several rounds in sky, brandish pistols and pasted posters to create terror in surrounding of Power Plant and Railway Sidings under Bermo Sub-Division. The accused imposed themselves as cadres of banned outfit to extort money from transporters, contractors and residents.
“Police recovered two countrymade pistols and live cartridges from their possession,” said SP.
Police team arrested the accused Ramesh Karmali and Rajesh Kumar Mahto conducting raid in their houses in Hurlung situated in foothill of Jhumra under Chatro-Chatti Police Station. Hurlung village is a Maoist prone area.
The duo was booked for the firing incidents occurred in Ash Pond of Bokaro Thermal Power Station (BTPS) on March, 20 and April, 7 besides recovery of posters at some places. The accused confessed of committing the crime along with their three associates. They imposed themselves as cadres of banned Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) to collect levy.
The incidents then had thrown challenge before the police as it occurred in the town area. Some residents believe that it was a Maoist act. But police conducting investigation found it was a criminal act. There were five members in the gang. Its kingpin Qutubddin Ansari was arrested on April, 15 for opening fire on Nawadih block president of 20 Point Programme. Ansari confessed his involvement in the firing incidents during police interrogation. Based on his statement Police conducted raid and arrested Karmali and Mahto. SP said that the others will also be arrested soon.
