Madhya Pradesh: In a shocking case, an image showing caste profiling of candidates in Madhya Pradesh has emerged. During a police recruitment rally candidates- marked as SC/ST on their chests. The visual has sparked an outrage with questions emerging on the recruitment process and the means to used to differentiate them from each other.
During the medical examination the candidates were branded as Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe candidates. “Candidates for post of Constables labeled with their respective caste on their chest during medical examination at a district hospital in Dhar is a serious matter & we have ordered an investigation”- a news agency quoted Superintendent of Police Birendra Singh as saying.The marking of the candidates come on the backdrop of an ongoing battle between the BJP at the Centre and the opposition parties. A massive outrage was triggered following the Supreme Court’s decision to tweak the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. While the Congress party had called for a Bharat Bandh, Sc, ST bodies from across the country have planned a mega rally on May 1.
Several Dalit organisations had called for a nationwide shutdown on Monday against the dilution of arrest provisions under the SC/ST Atrocities Act by the Supreme Court. At least seven persons were killed and many injured in violence during the bandh as Dalit protesters blocked trains, clashed with police and set fire to vehicles across several states.
The Supreme Court had on March 20 diluted the provisions of the Act and said government servants should not be arrested without prior sanction and private citizens, too, should be arrested only after an inquiry under the law.
