Jharkhand: Whether electricity wire reaches to the last village or not, but deputy commissioner(DC), Ranchi, Rai Mahimapat Ray come up fulfilling government’s commitment with his innovative effort producing liter of Light Version 2.0. It is produced using locally sourced materials and basic tools. Prime Minister, Narendera Modi praised the product during his visit to Ranchi on May, 25.
Sources said, that chief minister, Raghubar Das gifted prototype of liter of Light as memento to the PM. Meanwhile Ray gave a small demonstration before Modi during review of Aspirational districts at a Conference Hall in Birsa Munda Airport. PM in curiosity asked officials to put off the light in the hall and checked density of light coming from it in dark.
PM was also surprised to know that the product was made in just 36 hours and was designed and fabricated in the confidential office of the DC, Ranchi by a group of IIT students pursuing their summer internship with the District Administration. Mass production of Liter of light will cost as cheaper as Rs 80 each. Materials used in making liter of light are – thrown away waste plastic bottle was used as base and locally purchased 4volt solar panel and rechargeable battery which was fixed with PVC pipes.
DC said that “we are in process of scaling it up for production through women self help groups and be sold through pragaya kendra’s”. G M Sai Rama, who is pursuing fellowship under DC, Ranchi, said a ‘Liter of Light’ has the potential to transform indoor lighting in rural areas by harnessing the world’s largest source of energy.“It works on the concept of refraction of sunlight like a deck prism, delivering luminosity similar to a 40-60 Watt incandescent bulb,” added Rama.
About 22 PTG households were chosen as beneficiaries for the Liter of Light at Chano block in Ranchi. District Administration and JSLPS have tied up to create a chain of master trainers who would train local SHGs from other districts which would help in promotion of the Liter of Light across the state. In the long run, the market potential for this concept is immense as it could redefine indoor lighting in India while conserving energy and ensuring a New India which is green, inclusive and prosperous, said DC.
This is not the first time when DC, Rai Mahimapat Ray innovative skill was recognized. Earlier, Ray in his tenure of two years as Bokaro, DC bagged award for the highest number of toilets constructed in country for physically challenged people under Swacch Bharat Mission. Besides, PM too felicitated Ray on December, 2016 for his pioneering efforts and leadership in catalyzing India shift towards Digital transactions and others.
As a Ranchi DC, he has invited people with zeal to work with the government on a variety of issues in the field of policy implementation to bring meaningful change in areas ranging from Health to Malnutrition to Sanitation to education to skill development.
