Dalmiya Cement’s workers raised voice for job assurance

Bokaro: Production in Dalmia Cement Bharat Limited (DCBL) plant situated in Balidih has come to a grinding halt from past more than 24 hours with its workers have gone for indefinite strike demonstrating protest against outsourcing done by the company. Top level officials of Dalmia has rushed from headquarter to the Bokaro unit to handle the issue causing production as well as financial  in crores.

Company’s seniour official confirmed about the production affected. He said, “Management is taking effective steps to sort out the issue. The Dalmia Bokaro Cement Plant has a manufacturing capacity of 2.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA)”. The plant primarily caters cement to Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar. It was on 2014, December, Dalmia take over the cement unit from Jaypee Cement Limited.
The negotiation talks held between management officials and agitated workers, failed to pacify the issue on Tuesday. Several hundred contractual workers and Dalmia employees assembled at plant premises and raised anti-slogans against the management. They expressed their anger against the Dalmia management for sacking its few employees and putting future of contractual workers in dark.

This is for the first time when workers went on indefinite strike and protested after Dalmia took over the Cement unit. The workers have sent a letter to deputy commissioner, Mritunjay Kumar Baranwal asking to intervene in their favour. A good number of workers and employees in Dalmia are local residents. Some of them have even given their land for setting up of the plant, said Vikki Singh, an employee of Dalmia.
“We are on indefinite strike because Dalmia management has put our future and present on stake by outsourcing it to the third party. Many of us have to lose job. Management should have to assure that employees would not be transferred to any other unit without their consent. Their appraisal should not be affected nor they will be given forced retirement before time,” said Singh.
 Dalmia is in process of transformation by making it more technology efficient to enhance its performance.  In the process it has joined hand with IBM to enrich its employees skills and make better utilization of their working capacity. IBM is assessing skills of the employees in all the Dalmia units across the country. Based on it, the selected employees will be provided training.

Company sources said, that many of the employees are getting sacked with prior notice in the process. In Bokaro unit, about 12 employees are affected. This led to unrest among the employees and hundreds of contract workers. The contractual workers are also raising voice for the facilities and assurance over their job.
